The first team meeting I took after we had ‘somewhat’ formed a sales team at Flock — I started with an off-beat topic. It is less of a topic and more of a request. A request that I extend to everyone, including to a group of entrepreneurs today in a whatsapp group — Connect me to amazing people.
And today, via this story, I am extending that request to the whole of Medium community. Connect me to extraordinary people.
That’s it. No agenda. No goals in mind. Just help me get connected to amazing people.
WAIT. WHICH SECTORS? WHAT ROLES? WHO?
Doesn’t matter. None of that matters.
As long as they are the ones who inspire you. Their work, their passion, their dedication — that leaves you in awe and admiration of them. Their thought process — it amazes you.
If any of it brings out that warm tingly feeling in you, I would love to be connected to that person.
WHAT DO I MEAN BY AMAZING PEOPLE?
For the most part, the description above should have cleared things up. If not, here are some benchmarks that could help you help me better:
- Are they someone you would love to work for? (Not just work with, but for. And not because of the company he/she is working with, but because of the person.)
- Are they someone you turn to for advice? (Work, personal life, writer’s block. Anything. Does their thought process help you out when you feel stuck?)
- When you (or your business) face challenges, are they the ones whose name pops up in your head the first?
- Are they someone you would bring onboard your team in a heartbeat? (Forget about whether or not you can afford them or not, forget where they are located, forget all constraints. Just focus on the question.)
- Do they possess qualities you admire? (It could be anything. How good they are with the guitar. How you like their parenting style. How they maintain their calm and composure in testing times. Anything)
While reading these points, did some names pop up in your head? If yes, I would appreciate you connecting me to them. I am always available — mail@abyshake.com
WHY? WHY AM I DOING THIS?
I think this is an important question you would want answered before you do me this solid favour.
I believe in many things, one basic one being the truth that we all have something to teach others. I want to learn. They can help. Their experiences can help. I just want to know more about some of the exciting stories they have to tell.
Point 2, talking purely from a business view, I believe almost all businesses — at the core — are the same. Governed by the same macro principles, ideologies and rules. Just because someone isn’t from my line of business doesn’t mean that person can’t teach me (or help me realise) a few new things on how I can improve.
Point 3, I believe in dedicating a percentage of my time into learning new things and expanding my own knowledge base. Sure, books help. But so do new experiences. Let’s get to know about new experiences.
Point 4, The world is shrinking day by day — thanks to the power of tech. You never know when you strike the right chord with someone and the two of you set out on a crazy mission to do something new, something fun, something interesting. The geographical barriers? They are just lats and longs which no longer are as relevant as they once used to be.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO OFFER?
Other than my gratitude for the connect? Not much, I’m afraid. But whatever interesting tidbits I do gather, I’ll make sure I share them with everyone else. Right here on Medium.
So, let’s get to it. Shall we?
Connect me to people. You can do that by tagging them in a response right here, or you can do so on mail — mail@abyshake.com
Oh. And if I could offer two cents — you should do it as well. It is crucially important to startup founders to continuously maintain a large base of achievers and great resources irrespective of the fact whether your business needs it right now or not. Irrespective of the fact whether you can afford them or not. But it is equally important for your personal growth. So go ahead and make this request in your own network. Get to know amazing people.
