About a year ago, I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish every day.

I had read James Clear’s Atomic Habits, and I was intrigued by the idea that a set of small, daily habits could raise my productivity. I had been struggling with a lot of lazy hours in front of the computer screen, and really needed a boost.

The premise of the book is that productivity stems from how well you ingrain good habits into your life. We tend to think about success in terms of goals and strategies but, in fact, a system of practical, easy to follow habits matters a lot more.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”— James Clear.

Building My Habit System

I took the book’s message to heart and set out to build my daily habit system. I started by looking at aspects of my life that I wanted to improve. Fitness, diet, sleep, mindfulness, and writing — all had fallen off in the last year, and I wanted to bring them back. I wanted to create a daily routine that would make noticeable improvements in each of these areas.
