Being Labeled ‘Gifted’ as a Child Made Me an Idiot

I trusted my brain too much.

When I was 10, my parents took me to a very nice psychiatrist and subjected me to days of testing. One question I remember: “If you had to guess how far America is from Asia, how far would you guess?”

I only realized as an adult that they were testing me for autism.
