Embracing a Tech-Free Life, One Day at a Time
Like most people I know, I’m addicted to technology, whether it’s mindlessly scrolling my social media sites, going down the rabbit hole that is Pinterest, or reading news stories that only serve to raise my blood pressure. Coupled with my natural tendency towards overstimulation and overwhelm, I should have seen a long time ago that it was a recipe for disaster.
It’s too much. All of it. Too much information, too many choices, too many things to see, watch, read, comment on, pin, collect, bookmark for later. If you are a person who struggles with focus (timidly raises hand) the internet is hands down the biggest disruption you will ever encounter.
As a self-employed writer / editor, I work from home 99% of the time. Most of my networking and marketing? Online. Client communication? Online. Fact checking and research? Online. Editing of documents? Increasingly online. My computer is my lifeline (side note: I learned this the extremely hard way when my husband left my laptop at the Keflavík International Airport this past February — but that’s a story for another day).
I’ve known for some time that something had to give. My husband and I have talked about being tech-free over weekends, but have never been committed enough to follow through — a sure sign of our addiction.
