Years ago, my husband and I rented a creaky old farmhouse on a twisted dirt road. We were both in grad school, so we lived on the cheap by renting out extra rooms to friends, growing our own vegetables and wearing our clothes until they were so ragged that even a scarecrow would turn them down.

I have lots of fond memories of that time — like when one roommate had a wild dog and another had a wild girlfriend and one day the dog raided the trash and then pooped out rainbow colored condoms for the next week.

But some of the best nights that we spent at that house were when we organized and hosted storytelling parties for our eclectic group of friends.

Over the years, I’ve attended all kinds of parties — cocktail, surprise, birthday, pool — but none of them that same special quiet quality of a storytelling party.

There are so many things I have forgotten over the years. But for some reason, I can still picture my friend Dave telling about putting his He-Man collection into the trash after his Sunday School teacher told him he was sinning by playing with it so frequently. I remember my friend Peter, during a story about growing up adopted, describing a childhood temper tantrum during which he shouted…
