When I was an undergrad, I had some doubts about majoring in philosophy. Relatives and acquaintances told me that there was no money or career path in the real world for me. But I knew in my heart that I must pursue this field because money wasn’t the object. I simply needed to know the answers to life’s biggest questions for myself. If you’re in the same boat — trying to understand where your life path is supposed to take you and which road to go down — let me explain to you how I did it.

Especially if you’re studying philosophy or another subject that people say won’t take you anywhere, then this story is for you.

I felt drawn to the skills taught to philosophy majors: how to construct an argument, how to write a convincing essay, and how to discern a good argument from a bad one. It was most interesting to me to have exposure to thousands upon thousands of years’ worth of scholarly knowledge and theories about the questions facing humanity. Who are we? What are we? Why are we here? Does God exist?
