How to Be Successful — According to The #1 High-Performance Coach

Success — everyone is searching for it in some form or another.

To some, success is only based on financial gains.

To others success could be your spirituality.

It could be a living a life that YOU create. One that is dictated on YOUR terms — no one else.

As Tony Robbins said, “Success is doing what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.

This is my personal version of success.

Last year I became borderline obsessed with studying successful people.

I wanted to learn why some people can achieve greatness, freedom, and success while others merely exist.

Endless amounts of books, seminars, masterminds, podcasts, and Youtube videos helped me understand some of the key principles of success.

Tony Robbins has specifically helped more than anyone else. How can someone go from being a janitor to coaching billionaires?

While some still think of him as the positive thinking guy from the infomercials in the 1980’s he’s the real deal.

He is OBSESSED with success and helping others achieve their own.

If you want to take your life to the next level and create your own version of success, start by following these principles from the #1 high-performance coach in the world.

Take MASSIVE Action to Get Results (and “luck”)

“You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action.” — Tony Robbins

Action cures imperfection.

Action ends suffering.

Action gets you CLOSER to your goals.

If you don’t take massive action you will never change your life.

Quit waiting until everything is perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist!

Commit to a goal, try something, see if it works, and learn. If the approach doesn’t work, try a new one, and repeat the process until you succeed.

You’ll never achieve your goals by sitting on the sidelines hoping someone will make them happen for you.

The Questions You Ask Yourself Create The Quality of Your Life

“Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” — Tony Robbins

If you ask yourself a question, your brain will try to give you an answer… even if it’s a bad question.

You probably do this all the time and have unintentionally sabotaged your own success.

If you ask yourself, “Why am I so fat?” — your mind will give you a list of reasons.

But if you ask yourself, “What can I do to lose weight and enjoy the process?” — your mind will also give you an answer.

Be VERY careful with the questions you ask yourself.

I choose to live my life by asking this question constantly, “How did I get so lucky?”

This question forces my brain to think about everything going well in my life and the answer is MUCH better than the opposite.

Your Decisions Shape Your Destiny

“Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.” — Tony Robbins

Your life is where it is today because of YOUR decisions.

Your decisions shape your future.

How much different would life be if you didn’t make a few big decisions?

Maybe you moved after college, took a new job or started your own business.

If you want to change something in any area of your life all you need to do is make a decision.

As Michael Jordan’s trainer, Tim Grover said, “Decide, commit, act, succeed, repeat.”

Understand That Training NEVER Ends

“There is no greatness without a passion to be great, whether it’s the aspiration of an athlete or an artist, a scientist, a parent, or a businessperson.” — Tony Robbins

Studies have shown that people suffer from two major dips in people’s mental cognition in their life. They happen after graduation and retirement.

Our current education system makes young adults HATE learning. Not surprisingly, when they graduate they stop learning.

This is why the average American watches 4.3 hours of TV per day and only reads a few books a year (at most).

But learning shouldn’t end when you throw your graduation cap — it should just begin.

As Mark Twain said, “Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.

The most successful people in the world are always learning. This is why Tony is still as hungry for success nearly 30 years after beginning.

It’s the reason Warren Buffett spends 80% of his day reading and Bill Gates reads 52 books per year and still takes online courses.

Just because you become successful doesn’t mean you ever stop learning.

Grind When No One is Watching

“It’s what you practice in private that you are rewarded for in private.” — Tony Robbins

Success isn’t seen on Instagram, it’s behind the scenes.

It’s the late nights, early mornings, no days off, full-time grind. It’s not a 4-hour workweek (at least in the beginning).

If you want to live life like the 1% you need to work like the 1% too.

You can’t have a champagne taste and a beer standard for your own life.

Put in the work when no one is else is watching. With discipline, you can achieve nearly anything.

Focus on Your State

“The only problem we really have is we think we’re not supposed to have problems! Problems call us to higher level — face and solve them now!” — Tony Robbins

While some people think Tony Robbins is a positive hype man he actually hates “positive thinking.” Instead, he focuses on staying in a peak state.

Getting and maintaining a peak state is very different than positive thinking.

If you want to create an epic life you have to be able to get into the peak state on command.

Start by changing one of these three things:

  1. Physiology

The way you move your body dictates how you feel.

Think about it, do you feel better when you are walking with your chin up and chest out or slumped down in your chair?

Obviously the first, your feelings are directly related to your movement. Next time you find yourself in a bad mood realize what your body is doing and change it!

Focus on taking deep breaths, go for a walk, or force yourself to smile.

2. Language

Your brain is always listening to what you say, both internally and to others.

Choose your words wisely and be aware of the questions you are asking yourself.

3. Focus

As Tony Robbins said, “Focus goes where energy flows.

Don’t focus on problems only the solutions. Focus on things you are grateful for when you’re in a bad mood.

If you change your focus you can change your life.

Little Adjustments = BIG Changes

“Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives.” — Tony Robbins

Tony gave a golfing example that most people can easily relate, even if you’re not Tiger Woods. If the club hits the ball even 2 millimeters off it can go 10–30 yards off-line.

The same goes for your life.

One small adjustment can make all the difference in any area of life.

If you’re a writer, one tweak to your headlines and you might have an article go viral. If you’re trying to lose weight, one new fitness routine could help you finally create lasting change.

Master Your Mornings

“If you don’t have 10 minutes for yourself you don’t have a life.” — Tony Robbins

Morning routines are one of the easiest ways to make lasting change and drastically improve your life.

As Brian Sharma said, “If you win the morning you win the day” — Brian Sharma

Everyone will have a different version of a morning routine — it’s important to find what works for you.

Here is a quick morning routine Tony refers to as “priming.”

  • Practice “Breath of Fire” — 3 sets of 30 seconds each. Once you change your breathing you will change your physiology and give yourself energy for the day.
  • Focus on 3 things you are grateful for (1 minute each)
  • Think about 3 things you want to create. Envision your goals as already complete. (1 min each)

The 80/20 For Success

“Success in life is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics.” — Tony Robbins

If you’re unfamiliar with the 80/20 rule (known as the Pareto Principle) it basically says that for many events roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

80% of your income is earned from 20% of the work that you complete.

The same goes for success, focus on what moves the needle the most. Often times it will be the most challenging but it will also give you the most benefits.

Make Others Level Up Around You

“I challenge you to make your life a masterpiece. I challenge you to join the ranks of those people who live what they teach, who walk their talk.” — Tony Robbins

Have you ever found yourself in a great mood until you run into someone in your life where you feel like you have to take it down a notch?

Don’t let anyone dictate your mood, playing small doesn’t make other people bigger.

Create the rule in your life that you will never change your mood to match someone else’s unless you are going up.

You will become someone that will attract other successful people and gravitate to your positive, enthusiastic attitude.

Success Leaves Clues

“Success always leaves clues.” — Tony Robbins

Chances are, whatever you want to achieve in life someone has already done it in some capacity or another. Model these people to accelerate your own success.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel.

If you want to create an epic website, reach out to people you admire and ask what they did. Buy their course, watch their videos, and find ways to get them to mentor you.

If you want to lose 30 pounds find someone who has already lost the weight. Figure out what they ate, how often they exercised, and if they had a trainer.

Modeling others doing what you want to do will help you speed up your success!

Progress Is the Only Metric of Success

“Progress equals happiness.” — Tony Robbins

Whether you are $30,000 in debt or worth a $1 million dollars, humans need progress.

Think about the last time you were frustrated or upset with where your life was…you probably felt “stuck” right?

That is totally natural, human beings want to make progress, regardless of where you are in life.

Try to do something every single day that helps you keep progressing towards your goals.

Don’t let your happiness depend on others. Strive to make progress on yourself and your goals.

This will allow you to be better at work, with relationships, friends, and increase your overall happiness.

Be Grateful for Everything in Your Life

“When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.” — Tony Robbins

The Law of Familiarity states that “Things that form patterns that are familiar or meaningful are likely to be grounded together.

Don’t take things you love in your life for granted. Your spouse, dog, parents, car, and health.

Practice gratitude every single day.

Tell people you love them, buy your dog the biggest treat you can find. Give gifts for no reason. Write in a journal all the things you are grateful for on a regular basis.

Spoil the people you love — never take them for granted just because you see them on a consistent basis.

Plus, you can’t be grateful & suffer at the same time — its impossible.

Quit Dwelling on the Past

“Your past doesn’t equal your future .” — Tony Robbins

You’re not one moment in your past.

You will NEVER create a successful future if you’re always dwelling on the past.

If you made a mistake and you are still alive you can fix it. Some of the most successful people in the world had the hardest, most extremely difficult pasts ever.

Guard Your Inner Circle

Your life is a direct reflection of your peer group in almost every area.

As T. Harv Eker said in The Millionaire Mind, “Most people earn within 20 percent of the average income of their closest friends.

Your network is your net worth.” — Jim Rohn

If you surround yourself with positive, ambitious, and wealthy people you will become one of them eventually.

On the other hand, if you hang out with broke, pessimistic and negative people you will also become one of them.

Surround yourself with people who lift you up — your happiness, attitude and bank account will thank you.

Be Your Own Biggest Fan

“The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.” — Tony Robbins

When’s the last time you patted yourself on the back or clapped for something awesome you did or accomplished?

The next time you reach a goal, kick ass in a meeting or nail a speech applaud, clap, and love yourself.

You have to become your own biggest fan!

Celebrating your victories will affirm to your mind that you are on the right track and it will want to replicate these feelings in the future.

Focus on Fulfillment NOT Success

“Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” — Tony Robbins

Tony gave a chilling speech about success vs. fulfillment in regards to Robin Williams suicide. You can watch it here as well.

It’s possible to be successful and miserable, it happens to people all the time.

Don’t get so caught up in becoming financially successful that you forget to focus on what fulfills you as well.

Grow So You Can Give Back to The World

“The secret to living is giving.” — Tony Robbins

Tony is a huge giver as someone once fed his family as a kid which changed his life forever. He now feeds millions of people each year through his foundations and other charitable efforts.

The reason you should focus on growth is that once you grow you give. The biggest philanthropists in the world are also the richest. Not only can you help contribute money but other resources and connections to help change more lives.

I’m beyond confident that if you even implement half of these strategies into your life you WILL create massive positive changes.

And if you implement all of them and sustain over time, I can only imagine what heights you will reach.

Don’t settle — keep striving for greatness.
