So you’re a budding young writer who’d like to add “Published by The Ascent” to their résumé. Well, you’re in luck! This detailed resource guide is meant to make that as easy as possible for you.
Here, you will find everything you need to know in order to get your written work featured in The Ascent as well as general best practices on how to succeed here on Medium.
Let’s begin our climb, shall we?
What We Look for and Prefer to Publish
The Ascent is “a community of storytellers documenting the journey to happiness & fulfillment.” Basically, we’re here to help inspire and educate others to lead better lives, whatever their individual goals may be.
We believe in authentic, personal storytelling. The stories that perform best for us are rooted in firsthand experience and packed with tons of value, in the form of personal lessons and profound takeaways for the end reader.
Like Medium itself, we value quality. We want readers to walk away feeling empowered, ready to conquer any challenges they may face.
For every story we review, we ask ourselves the following questions:
✔ Is this story written from a personal perspective?
Does the writer provide empirical evidence to support or justify their claims? Is the story rooted in real-world knowledge or experience?
✔ ️Is this story written for the reader?
Does it provide meaningful advice, offer an original take on an important issue, or share a new insight or perspective beyond conventional wisdom?
✔ ️Does this story offer a good reading experience?
Is the story well-formatted with a clear beginning, middle, and end? Is the language clear and concise, with a mobile audience in mind?
✔ ️Does this story meet a high editorial standard?
Is it well-written, easy to follow, narratively compelling, properly punctuated, and free of typos or grammatical errors?
For automated assistance in catching typos and other trivial mistakes, we highly recommend installing Grammarly. This will not only help you submit error-free work but also help us streamline our reviews. You can sign up here using our affiliate link.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind:
- We only accept unpublished drafts. This is so we can ensure proper scheduling and that each story spends ample time on our front page.
- We only accept members-only content. This qualifies your story for curation, exposing it to a much larger audience (and potentially earning you money in the process). You can join the Partner Program here.
- We prefer original content. This ensures we are not posting duplicate content on Medium. If you would like to cross-post an article to your personal blog that is okay, but please do not (re)submit past work.
- We prefer 5-minute-plus reads. This helps cut the number of stories we’re reviewing overall and places a deeper emphasis on quality. 5- to 7-minute reads tend to perform best on Medium, generally speaking.
Please note, a story is not guaranteed acceptance simply because it meets all the above criteria. Subject matter, timing, and volume are also important. We currently publish up to 20 stories per day.
As a proud Medium partner since July 2019, we hold our content to an incredibly high standard. If you’re looking for additional guidance, we recommend reviewing Medium’s curation guidelines and rules, as well as the following resources:

Getting Added as an Ascent Contributor
Once you’re familiar with the above guidelines, the next step is to add you to our publication as a writer. Lucky for you, applying to The Ascent has never been easier. Just fill out this quick form (please submit only once):
You should be added within 5–7 business days (though we do pride ourselves on being quicker). Once added as a writer, you should receive an email from Medium confirming so, depending on your settings. You will also be able to see us in your list of publications, but more on that below.
Submitting Your Story for Consideration
Now that you’ve applied to be a contributor and have a better understanding of what success looks like here, it’s time to actually send us some stories.
The next time you finish a draft, just do the following to submit it to us:
- Click the “…” button near the top-right corner of the page
- Select “Add to publication”
- Choose “The Ascent” from the list of pubs (please note, you may need to scroll)
- Click “Add draft” to submit your story for review
- Wait patiently for your draft to be reviewed (we’ll try our best to get to it quickly)
Depending on your settings, you should receive an email from Medium once your story is accepted or rejected, along with a private comment at the top of your story from us letting you know when you can expect it to go live.
Please note that as we’ve grown, so have our daily submissions. In fact, we now receive over 100 new submissions each and every day. That has led to an ever-increasing emphasis on story quality, as well as sending out many more rejections. We appreciate your patience and commitment as a writer while we continue to grow. Our current turnaround time for reviews is 5-7 business days.
If you focus on the written guidelines above, you’ll be on the fast track to getting published and curated. We’re excited to play a part in your journey.
If you have any questions, feedback, or concerns, please let us know. The quickest way to reach us is via Twitter. We do our best to read every response.
Good luck on your writing journey and welcome to The Ascent.
