Let’s begin, shall we?
How to Get Added as a Contributor
Before we get into the what and how of submitting, let’s make sure you’re on our radar. Applying to The Ascent has never been easier.
Just fill out this form:
You should be added within 1–3 business days (though we do pride ourselves on being quicker). Once added, you should receive an email from Medium confirming so, depending on your settings. You will also be able to see us in your list of publications, but more on that below.
What We Look for and Prefer to Publish
The Ascent is “a community of storytellers documenting the journey to happiness & fulfillment.” Basically, we’re here to help inspire and educate others to lead better lives, whatever their individual goals may be.
We believe in authentic, personal storytelling. The stories that perform best here are rooted in firsthand experience and packed with tons of value, in the form of personal lessons and profound takeaways for the end reader.
Every publication on Medium has the ability to assign itself 5 tags, which makes it easier to get discovered in search. Here are the tags we’ve chosen:
Notice a pattern? We’re equal parts real life and true self, with a healthy dose of improvement, development, and growth in between.
Specifically, we like to abide by Medium’s own curation guidelines and rules while reviewing story submissions, as that sets everyone here up for success. Take a few minutes to read both, as well as some of the most common errors:
5 of the Most Common, Easy-to-Fix Problems We See in Curation
Simple tips from Medium Curation
We prefer to receive unpublished drafts as opposed to pre-published submissions, because it enables us to schedule new content out as we see fit and ensure every piece spends ample time on our front page.
We also prefer to receive members-only content when possible, because it’s subject to curation and thus has the potential to bring a larger number of visitors to the page. This also helps earn the author money for their work, so joining the Medium Partner Program is worthwhile on both ends.
Fun fact: Midway through 2019, The Ascent's top stories (i.e., those with 1,000+ views) have combined to help writers earn over $25,000.
How to Submit Your Story for Consideration
Now that you’ve applied to be a contributor and have a better understanding of what success looks like here, it’s time to actually send us some stories.
The next time you finish a draft, just do the following to submit it to us:
- Click the “…” button near the top-right corner of the page
- Select “Add to publication”
- Choose “The Ascent” from the list of pubs (depending on the number you may need to scroll)
- Click “Add draft” to submit your story for review
- Wait patiently for your draft to be reviewed (we’ll try our best to do so within 24 to 48 hours)
Depending on your settings, you should receive an email from Medium once your story is accepted or rejected. If it’s rejected, you may receive a private comment at the top of your article mentioning why (though this will not always be the case, unfortunately, do to our volume of submissions).
That’s it! If you’ve taken note of the various rules and nuances above, you should be well on your way to becoming a published writer in The Ascent.
