It’s Saturday

Our autism journey

The words are flowing today. Owen woke with words and hasn’t stopped. The first words out of his mouth were “give me that”. These words immediately sent my mind in motion. Owen has been learning and storing things since he was a baby. He is starting to say words and phrases that he learned years ago. This makes it more and more apparent to me how much our words and actions mean and impact our world. He couldn’t always respond to my words or actions, but he could certainly internalize them and this still affects him. We can’t always say things in a kind tone or the nice voice if we are trying to correct or stop a behavior, but it makes me think more about how I will try to handle situations with him. I try to focus on the positive side of life, but sometimes there are moments in time where life gets you and your words and actions reflect those moments. Owen talked about so many things, most of his words referring to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and other Disney shows he watches. The connections help him with so many things. I was excited when he was watching one of the videos and it said “it’s Thursday” and Owen said “it’s Saturday”. I’m not sure if he understands it is Saturday or if that is the video he likes more so he replaced Thursday with Saturday. We talk about the days of the week, I tell him what he is going to do for the week, but I’m not sure that he understands how it all comes together. Every day I’m thankful for his words. The connections give me the hope, the smile gives me the inspiration, and the laugh makes my day. Owen is my gift. He is my bright spot on gloomy days and I’ve learned as much from him as I could possibly ever teach him. Positive actions, positive words, equals a positive life. Live life forward. Smiles to all and donut daze!
