Motivation or Process?
Aristotle once said “We are what what we repeatedly do, excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”, and it is true today and I believe it will always be. Motivation is great and it pushes us to do more and achieve more in life, demand more out of our limiting beliefs and even helps to push them away. It can also help sail through one of the dangerous tides called “depression”
But since it is an act of hormones, it is “temporary”. So all those stories which people have told you of how they or someone they know decided one day that they are going to turn their life around, however they always hide an important aspect “the process” which helped them to do so.
Process compels us to do things, whether we want it or not, like feeding is a process, breathing is a process, infact most of the things that we do and on which our life depends upon are all processes and we have to do them whether we are motivated enough or not.
Process is required to succeed in Business as in life
As an entrepreneur we tend to be in the “do it all” mode, however all successful entrepreneurs will tell you that you need to have a system in place that can take you from bootstrapping to money strapping mode (lets face it, money is important, even if you have a good motive other than money of doing what you do, still you need money to sustain and spread your message and work).
So, as we have processes set in our life, we need them in our business as well. None of us are good at everything but we all are good at something, so you have to create a system in which you attract people who are better than you in one aspect and in a way you increase your chances of becoming successful.
Process will keep you going, even if you are not motivated enough
Churchill once said, “if you are going through hell, keep going”, (even Elon Musk loves it) if you interpret correctly, you can easily guess the importance of a system to continue and not giving up on the stuff you want, even when the results are not as expected. In business world, there’s no one who can claim they haven’t had any hurdles in their lifetime. Hurdles are part of the game and at times you might not be motivated enough of doing things. When you have a system/ process in place it makes you go through the tasks, even if you don’t want to and hence shapes the moment which will later define your success.
A good system/ process is your real friend as it compels you to do the right thing even at the wrong time, which we all have gone through in our lives. Hence all those small task which you’ll complete because of having a system in place will define your future and your success.
I am not against motivation at all, of all it is one of the best state to be in, but we also have to understand its “temporary” status and while we are in the moment, it is best to work towards developing a process which will lead us to success.
