I didn’t grow up with wealth and privilege. I don’t deny that I had white privilege, but financial privilege wasn’t something I possessed. Over the years, I became more and more conscious of my lack of polish. For some, it seemed to come easily, but no matter how hard I tried, I always felt like having been raised poor was emblazoned on my forehead.
