Size Doesn’t Matter
What matters is what it means to you.
Let me tell you a story …
From the age of about 18 to 23 I was debilitated by scale. I was debilitated by big business and big dreams.
I would come up with ideas that would seemingly change the world, get started, and then fizzle out because I was taking on a dream the size of Mount Everest. I would repeat this cycle over and over again (the definition of insanity), only attaching myself to projects and ideas that were HUGE, and time and time again I would fizzle out — overwhelmed by the scale of it all. Maybe you have experienced this as well?
I now have two kids, a lovely wife, and much more responsibility than I did when I was 18. I have come to realize that to be an entrepreneur and build something meaningful you don’t need to have a multimillion dollar business. You don’t need to build Amazon, Facebook, or Twitter. What you need is something that you can be proud of and that helps others.
Im not going to get into talks about profitability, marketing, and employees. That is not what this conversation is for. By the way, profitability is important.
I really wanted to put this article together to encourage any entrepreneurs out there that might feel stuck.
Maybe you have started and stopped quite a few “grand” ideas. I would encourage you to start something small, work hard at it for a long time, and see where it takes you. Maybe you start your town’s next great lawn service. Maybe you start writing just 200 words a day to contribute to your book. Maybe you start babysitting. None of these things are insignificant, and I think we need to be reminded that.
In a world where we have such great access to folks like Zuckerberg and Bezos we lock our eyes on them and only want to build an empire, and while empires aren’t bad, villages have a ton of value too.
Cheers
