I’ve read too much negative and despairing stuff today! But I remember that we are to focus not on the seen but the unseen.

As followers of Jesus, we don’t ignore injustice and hatred and we certainly condone any behavior that degrades any portion of humanity.

How do we balance the call to overcome evil with the need to focus on the unseen? That’s a good question. It’s a question I struggle with. Here are some suggestions — and I would love to hear more, so, please, share!

Pray. That’s the best place to start. There is an abundance of suffering taking place in our countries. Injustice, bigotry and violence all start in the heart. Prayer become the foundation for changed hearts. Prayer takes us to the unseen God who provides strength and wisdom. It also works to take all that is wrong in the world to the One who can make it right.

Encourage. Discouragement is all around us. Positive words are needed everywhere and by everyone. Lift someone up. In particular, seek out someone who may be a victim and encourage them. Become their friend, even if for a few minutes.

Participate. Lately, we have seen reports of hundreds of children separated from their parents due to the United States’ immigration policies. Speaking out can change this. Whatever your political leanings, as a follower of Jesus you know that this is neither right or healthy. Speak up!

The love that Jesus brings to our world is a love for everyone. When we receive this love we carry a huge responsibility to share this love with everyone — even those who don’t deserve it; or, maybe, especially with those who don’t deserve it.
