The 3 Reasons Why I Started Blogging

Starting to blog is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Although the catalyst may have been a particularly traumatic time in my life, I continue to blog for much more than therapeutic relief.

In fact even if nobody read a single word, I would blog everyday. Here are a few reasons why.

1 — Blogging = Thoughtful Examination

“If you know tomorrow you had to say something about something you noticed, that might help someone else, about an opinion that needs to stand the test of time, you will eventually form that opinion and invent that idea. If day after day, you leave that trail behind of thoughtful examination of your world, you can’t help but get better at whatever it is you seek to do.” -Seth Godin

Many of us live our lives as mouthpieces for the ideas of others. Rarely do we synthesize existing ideas with our own experiences to form a unique perspective about the things we care about.

Some of us may form the feeling of a unique insight in our bones, but are unable to articulate it for others to appreciate that feeling as well.

Every idea is formed twice: once in the mind and once in real life. Blogging can a machine for forming new ideas in the mind and making yourself accountable to others to form them in real life.

Rather than live a life where things pass me by, I collect the data points of my own life and interpret them through blogging toward something greater.

2 — Blogging = Tone Setting

“ Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and
synchronize the day at hand.” — Julia Cameron

They call the first years of our life our “formative years”. They have a huge impact on shaping the people we become.

They should call the first hours of our day our “formative hours”. They have a huge impact on shaping the day we have.

The first thing I do when I wake up is write. And then I share that writing here.

My writing is open authenticity. It is a release.

I start my day giving this to the world. It sets a tone of open authenticity for the rest of my day. It gives me emotional space to take in the rest of the day because I had I released emotion at the start.

Rather than let outside forces dictate the tone of my day, I dictate it through blogging.

3 — Blogging = Trust Building

“My goal is not to have more readers or sell more books. My goal is to be trusted in a way that I can make the change that I seek to have happen in the world.” — Seth Godin

The most important thing in my life are my relationships. The most important thing in my relationships is trust.

In the one hour that it has taken to write this blog, I will be developing further trust with all of those who read it.

In terms of a return on the investment of my time, this is the jackpot.

Rather than let my relationships blow in the wind, I reinforce them daily with minimal effort through blogging.
