It is imperative to mention that many people do not understand the importance of self-awareness, this is something that can help you to become a better person by being aware of your traits and personality. There are many different ways to improve and develop yourself however there is a way that stands out to society and is very underrated. The best way to develop self-awareness is by keeping a journal.
Why is this the best method of Development?
There are many reasons as to why you should be keeping a journal, the main reason why this is a good self-awareness tool is because as the years go by you can see from the records kept the way that you have changed based on different events that have taken place in your life as well as the circumstances you are living in.
Whoever says that a person does not change in their life is quite wrong. At some point in time, we all subdue to some sort of personality change, this change can be either positive or negative but no matter the outcome you needed this change, therefore, you let yourself change.
By keeping a journal you can see how the changes in your life affect you as well as the people around you, the thing about this change in personality which leads to a change in behaviour is not noticed by you at all, therefore if it is a negative change it can be harmful to the people around you. By going over the journal you can see how the change has affected you as well as how you have affected others because of this change. This will make you aware that a counterchange is needed as the behaviour is not adequate to your persona.
You are not required to keep a daily track but, you should write when there is a major event in your life that you feel has affected you in some sort of way. At the same time with this method, we need to take into consideration the change that occurs with ageing. As we age there are certain traits that can develop further or evolve into new traits. For example, you can have the trait of being patient, with time and as you age this patience is starting to run out and so the patience trait is evolving into impatience.
Keep looking back at your young self
It is vital to be reminded by the journal of who you are as well as the type of person you are aspiring to be or become. You may want more or less from yourself or a boost of self-motivation as you are a better person that has the potential for more.
By looking at your personal journal you are also tracking the emotions you have and you can see the way your emotions are guiding you towards different things depending on preference. As you self-reflect on yourself you need to ask yourself different types of questions in order to become more aware of yourself from a different perspective. These are vital questions and can be seen as harsh however this will showcase the true change.

Who am I?
It is easy to get lost through your emotions and in combination with stress very easy to lose your true self.
Am I a positive person?
The best thing you can do in this life is to make another person’s life better and you do this by maintaining a positive attitude not only when interacting with others but in whatever it is that you do on a daily basis.
You should look at the journal as a sort of descriptive tool that will help you find the answers to such questions that will help you change your mental state in a positive manner from which a positive behaviour will be born. By keeping a journal the development will be constant based on how frequent you self-reflect. Self-awareness leads to a healthy state of mind so developing your self-awareness is just like taking vitamins to maintain a healthy organism.
How has this helped me?
A few years back when I was struck by emotional events in my life I did not see or notice the way it was changing me as a person. I let my emotions control most of my decisions and this was bad as those decisions would end up with future negative consequences. I started writing down the way that I was feeling every day for almost 2 years. This was helping me calm down and get out of the mental state I was in. Every week I would read back on what I have written as If I was looking at another person's life and not mine. From looking at myself from a different perspective I was able to see how my emotions were affecting not only me but the people around me.
This journal that I was keeping made me aware of the way that I was changing as well as aware of the fact that is was not ok. It just wasn’t me anymore. I became a pessimistic mess that did not have hope in tomorrow. After some time I have realized that this pessimistic attitude will soon drive me towards depression, I have been down that road and did not want to ever go again so one day I turned myself 180 degrees. Even to this day, I keep reading the words I have written a few years ago to remind myself in the worst days that no matter how difficult life gets I have to face it as I am.
