Writing a book is a daunting task but worth the effort.
There are four big mistakes new authors make. By avoiding them, you will increase the chance of writing a bestselling book.
Don’t Read the Genre
Reading the genre you write is the most important key to success.
You need to read the types of books you want to write for two reasons.
First, readers expect certain things to happen over and over in the books they read. In a crime story, the reader expects someone to try and solve the murder.
Second, how are other authors approaching the subject? Unless you have an amazing twist that no one has ever done before, you should approach the subject the same way.
No Clear and Concise Vision
Authors approach drafting a book in two ways: Outliners and Pantsers.
Outliners have mapped out how the story will happen. For most writers, outlining helps to write faster because you have a map to follow.
I outline everything! I decided what were the four mistakes. Created a headline for each mistake. Made bullet point notes before turning the words into sentences and paragraphs.
Pantsers write by the “seat of their pants.” They sit down and write without any outline. I would find that incredibly difficult to do but it works for some people.
I would suggest being an Outliner in your writing career as you will be able to produce work faster.
Not Writing an Introduction
This mistake might seem obvious to most people. But so many authors ignore it.
The readers expect an introduction to your book. What makes you the person to write it? Why should the reader trust what you have to say?
You need to tell the reader why you are an expert or someone with extensive knowledge of the subject.
These three things you must tell the reader:
1. Who you are
2. Purpose of the book
3. What the reader will be learning
Provide those three things sets the pace of the book.
Not Having a Proper Conclusion
Without a conclusion, the book abruptly stops leaving the reader hanging. As an author, you summarize what the reader has learned.
Go read other books introductions and conclusions in your topic. See how they create a mood for the reader.
A proper conclusion will make the reader want your next book, go to your website, and follow you on social media. Once you get a reader hooked on your work, make sure to reel them in!
Writing a successful book does not have to be difficult. By not making these four mistakes, you are on your way to creating a book people will want to read.
