Our autism journey

“What’s the big idea”, Owen says as he watched Donald from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse say the same thing and he laughs hysterically, so do I. This phrase cracks me up. The inflections and tones Owen puts on the words always sound like the character, app or person he has learned them from. This fascinates me in so many ways. His vocabulary is coming stronger and stronger every day, yet there are words he was saying that he hardly says at all now. He stores so much information until the right moment for him. Like he puts it on a shelf waiting for the moment he needs it again or can process how to put it together to explain what he needs. He hasn’t said the phrases “I’m prouWd de ewe or I wuv ewe” in what seems like forever. I still tell him I’m proud of him and I love him all the time, but he is learning so many other things those phrases sit on the sidelines for now. All of this was hard at first, still is some days, because your baby learns something and then it feels like it is gone. You want those words, some days you feel like you need those words, but he can’t say them. They are there though, that’s what I remind myself all the time. My emotions are always right on the edge of happiness, sorrow, bewilderment, amazement, and a thousand other things, but the constant is love. Even in the shadows of doubt or the longing for answers, love is the part that conquers all. I have more questions than I have answers, I have more faith than I have doubt, and I have more love than I ever dreamed of. Find your drive, your passion, and inspiration, and follow your dreams. Smiles to all and donut daze!
