I just looked up habitually to check the time on the clock which I usually have on the top of my dresser. But not seeing it there, since I had lent to a friend, led me to reflect on the significance of time.

A year into carving out an entrepreneurial career for myself and going from idea to starting a new business has made me realize even more how precious time is. It’s like trying to catch a live fish with your bare hands that keeps wriggling and slipping away. Time, in this case, is like a competitor which is constantly challenging me and creating an obstacle course: should I spend the next hour working on my business plan, responding to a prospective supplier, planning my next business trip, or reading an article about a game changer in my industry?

Fortunately, mindfulness comes to the rescue to help me to respond to these small but not minor decisions on how to best spend my precious time; simply being aware and listening to what my mind, and others, are telling me in the moment helps me to take advantage of unplanned activities which can be key opportunities to help me build a new, innovative, scalable business ecosystem, which are filled with problems to solve!

Then, time has another dimension to it: after suddenly losing my parents, in 2012 and 2014 , and 2016 followed with my father-in-law’s passing and my husband deciding to take a different path in life, time has been by my side and helping me to heal. It’s a long, arduous journey, but I have been saved so far by a formula of praying/reflecting/meditating which helps me to be mindful, and then with the passage of time the ‘hard tannins’ of my hurt, pain and anger soften, allowing me to be resilient and move forward, just like how a great wine forms!

As the end of the year comes to a close, let’s open an older vintage of a great red wine and toast to gratitude and healing along this dynamic journey of life!

Ciao for now,

Sheila
