Useful or Trivial?

There’s a lot of hype about technology. Between this new app and that new tactic, it seems like you’re constantly trying to learn new tools. It’s one thing after another that you’re having to understand and put into practice. It can be OVERWHELMING. I get it.

I love technology. I use it every day. I love teaching people how to use technology. Technology can be great. However, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I don’t love ALL technology. There’s a lot of it that I personally don’t like and find to be incredibly annoying. Here’s the thing though, it’s not just about technology and the latest digital fad. It’s about the RIGHT technology and using it the RIGHT way. Really, technology is not the most important part. Technology is not the solution. Technology is simply a vehicle to help you get there.

So if using technology and having the latest, coolest digital thing is just the vehicle, what is the solution?

The real solution is being useful.

It sounds simple, and honestly, it is. Piggybacking off of another article where I talked about minimalism and simplifying things, being useful is pretty similar. The word “useful” can be defined as being of use or service; serving some purpose; advantageous, helpful, or of good effect.

When you are useful, it’s less about you, and more about the people you are trying to serve.

Our society often fuels the “me, me, me” mindset, and teaches us to focus only on ourselves and our own success. Striving to be successful is not a bad thing, but when success is based on the standards that only revolve around money or fame, success becomes trivial.

When you focus on being useful instead of being successful, you take yourself out of the “me, me, me” mindset. You become focused more on the people you are trying to serve and less on yourself and your own success. Truly being helpful to those people will become your driving factor, and with that, success will follow. The type of success, however, that won’t be trivial. The type of success that will instead leave an impact.

Before you get overwhelmed thinking of all the steps you’ll need to take to bring your idea into the world. Before you get bogged down learning all of the “new technology” you’ll need to use. Ask yourself one question — is what you’re doing going to be useful for someone?

There are a lot of things in the world that aren’t particularly useful. It’s up to us to decide how useful we want to be.

Love what you do. Make an impact. Be useful.
