What I Learnt From Tyrion Lannister To Survive In The Corporate World

In order to fuel my excitement for the latest season of Game of Thrones I have been brushing up on all the older episodes. Every time I watch the show I find more depth in each of the characters, however this time I couldn’t help but notice the relevance of Tyrion’s quotes in today’s corporate world.

“Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour and it can never be used to hurt you.”

Having clarity on one’s weaknesses and strengths is the foundation of excelling in corporate life. When you are confident of your skill-set it reflects in your working style and you can project yourself assertively at every stage.

On the other hand, there are several occasions when colleagues and managers highlight your weaknesses (especially during the appraisal season). So having clarity on your areas of improvement and acknowledging your weak spots will not only help you progress, but will also shield you from negativity within your workspace.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my relatively short working life it’s that knowledge is power. Not just knowledge about your own industry, product and organisation, but about everything that’s happening around the world. If you want to outshine competition and have a say in your organisation’s decisions make sure you are well-read.

Being in the sales function, networking is the one rule that I have to abide by at all times. In the present context where everyone is so well connected having access to the right set of people can be a game changer for any business. So make sure you take out time to socialise with as many people as possible and help them grow their respective business. You never know when any of them may be able to guide you or connect you to relevant information and resources.
