An apple a day didn’t keep the doctor away.

After going off the contraceptive pill in late 2020, my skin broke out in the worst acne I’d ever experienced. Several months later, it’s still painful, peeling, cystic, inflamed, and itchy. At first, I felt resilient — “this too, shall pass,” I reassured myself.

But then, the acne got worse, and I started struggling with it. I went to the doctor and had blood tests done (which ruled out PCOS), I started seeing a naturopath, and I visited a skin clinic. It would take me all day to write about the different things I’ve tried (and am still trying) to reduce my acne, but here’s one key thing my naturopath said to me.

“You need more variety in your diet, Rach. I’d like you to aim for at least 40 different fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices every week.”
