Realizing the benefits of a full Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) syste

Semarang, a city of 1.5 million people, is experiencing significant population growth and seeing the emergence of new growth centers across its metropolitan area. In order to accommodate this growth, the government of Semarang City is focused on enabling mobility.

The city is looking to scale up its bus network and transition it to a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The current bus network has six routes linking different parts of Semarang, that will benefit from adopting best practice BRT principles including building dedicated right of way, minimizing bus emission and integration with other public transport.

In addition, the coverage of the current bus system is limited, as it does not connect to the greater Semarang area. This means that private motorcycles are still the preferred method of transport for people in Semarang, including students below driving age who have few transport options besides motorcycles.

Semarang has recently completed a prefeasibility study on shifting the current bus network to a fully-fledged BRT system. This study is an opportunity to improve and expand the system to better cater to the city’s mobility needs and realize additional benefits such as reduced carbon emissions and improved health and safety outcomes.

Investment/Partnership Opportunity:

Semarang needs technical expertise, funding and financing to support a detailed feasibility study for the full BRT, including operation and management, investment preparation, project planning and design of a fully-fledged, metropolitan scale BRT.
