Meredith lay in bed, drifting to sleep as Ethan caressed her head, smoothing her hair back. He was overcome by fatigue, his strokes growing slower as he slipped into slumber as well.

Both so relaxed, they didn’t notice the front door, which they had forgotten to lock, being nudged open.

They didn’t hear two men begin to carry out their valuables while the other came slinking toward the bedroom.

They didn’t stir as the bedroom door was pushed open, barely making a sound.

They remained still as the man lifted his arm, pointing an end to everything straight at them.

At least they were peaceful in their last moments together.
