Hi !

Trust you‘re doing well and keeping safe in these difficult times.

As we are greeted by yet another wave of the pandemic, we hope that everyone is keeping safe and recovering quickly. And we hope that we don’t have to part with the simple pleasures of feeling the warm sun and a cool breeze that a quiet walk on a sunny Sunday afternoon can provide.

And as we wait in our winter shelters, we’ve kept ourselves busy. Busy building something meaningful that will likely be our life’s work. And so I’ve taken this short post to explain what that is.

Every struggled with forming healthy habits? Waking up earlier? Eating healthier? Procrastinated on the important stuff?

Well, we certainly have and we know it can create an uncomfortable cycle of failed attempts and making change, which certainly don’t feel the best.

And so instead of actually doing what we’re supposed to, we ended up procrastinating and launching a product to solve behaviour change for everyone, everywhere.

Our vision is to build meaningful technology products that create positive change in the world.

We believe that self-regulation is the biggest problem of our modern times And that, it’s getting worse.

  • Lifestyle diseases: 68% of Americans are obese. This number will increase to 75% will by 2030. src
  • Screen time: 49% of adults reported that they are addicted to their mobile phones.
  • Workplace burnout: A Deloitte survey reported 77% of respondents experiencing burnout at their current job src.
  • Financial health: 38% of people aged 18–29 have no retirement savings and only 51% of people aged 60 plus say their savings for retirement are on track. src

It’s important to acknowledge that aside from genetics — our environment, circumstances and agency play a crucial role in health and wellbeing — and we want to influence these factor to drive change for the better.

At atom, we are attempting to make healthier habits easier to build through gamification, behaviour design and AI.

Some reference to get a sense of what’s inspired our product :

Fogg Behaviour Model (5mins)

Game design, applied to software (10mins)

Octalysis : A model for Gamification (12mins)

Behaviour Change Interventions (BCTs) to effect Change (15mins):

While several others have made significant progress towards this mission and goal, we feel there is plenty left to be done.

  • Noom : Behavioural psychology and coaching for healthy eating habits
  • Forest : # 1 productivity app in US, uses a simple game mechanic to regulate phone usage.
  • Fabulous : Behaviour design to build daily routines.
  • Calm : Simple meditation app
  • Zwift : Hardware enabled indoor video-game that connects your bike to a virtual race track

We appreciate you taking out the time to know us.

Take care :)

Self-regulation is the biggest problem of our modern times. Tech should support us instead of distracting us away from our true path. At Atom, we are attempting to solve exactly this through behaviour psychology, game design and AI to help people achieve their goals.
