How to Build a Deep and Genuine Male Friendship

A deep and genuine friendship between two men is one of the most meaningful, supportive, and beautiful connections in existence.

Aristotle, the 2000-year-old philosopher who’ still widely cited today, says there are three types of friendships. The first two are based on pleasure and utility. Pleasure friendships often form between younger people and are based on mutual experiences. They go through high school together or are members of the same soccer club. Utility friendships are more common among older men. Think of business networking or neighbors watering your plants while you’re on vacation.

The third kind is what Aristotle calls “the perfect friendship.” You appreciate each other’s values, virtues, qualities, and them as a person.

This friendship is invaluable. 2020 was a crazy year, but my deep and genuine man-to-man friendships gave me the necessary stability and tranquility. I spent most summer evenings sitting on a riverbank with a good friend, getting lost in our conversation. It was wonderful to have this connection with someone who understands you and gives advice beyond the general it’s gonna get better.
