If you are autistic, you may be very familiar with what causes you sensory overload. Knowing your triggers can help you greatly when it comes to managing your emotions and mental wellbeing. Sometimes, overload can happen gradually without us realising and then when we reach breaking point, it’s too late to turn back. All we can do is try to manage the situation as best we can with the resources we have.

So – how do we take steps to prevent sensory overload?

It is so easy to forget to take breaks but having time out to decompress and relax can help prevent you from becoming too emotionally overwhelmed. This is a vital part of self-care for autistic adults and children as this will ensure that you are more able to deal with daily tasks effectively.
