Why I Chose to Quit My Job During a Global Pandemic

If you’re a career advisor, you probably won’t advise your clients to leave their job any time soon. I would go as far as to say that many people would tell you that even if you hate your job, the best thing you can do is suck it up and wait for the storm to pass — If you’re currently in work, then you are one of the lucky ones, fortunate to earn a wage when others are struggling to make ends meet.

On paper, this is sound advice.

In reality, things are not so black and white.

My life from the outside looking in was one many could only dream of. I was a young man in his early thirties, living and working in the Balearic islands on a 34-metre superyacht. Beaches, palm trees, and jugs of sangria were sunk under the gaze of an ever-present sun.

What more could anyone ask for?

Yet despite the postcard image and the excellent wage, something wasn’t right. Despite having this fantastic opportunity and this incredible lifestyle, I went to bed feeling unfulfilled and empty. Every day I believed my skills and strengths were not being utilised. I felt lost and rudderless, lacking any real clarity.
