Charlize Theron went on The View yesterday (that still exists!) and told the lady hosts that she would not be getting married to her longtime boyfriend Stuart Townsend until gay marriage was legalized across America. “I don’t want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights,” she said. “I have so many friends who are gays and lesbians who would so badly want to get married, that I wouldn’t be able to sleep with myself.” (First of all: insert joke about “sleeping with yourself” for the gays here.) We applaud the sentiment. But she is going about it all wrong. If Charlize Theron really wants to effect change in America, she should say that will get married unless the government legalizes gay marriage. And that she will pose nude, holding a machine gun, on the cover of Maxim magazine as soon as the bill is signed into law.
