Some principles for working

With a new staff member joining the team this week, I gathered my thoughts to give them some guidelines or principles on how to tackle their work. I realised that the principles ended up being useful for my own work too — and perhaps for anyone, in work, in community. So I’m sharing them here:

  1. Follow your instincts

2. Make the role your own

3. Ask for help early and often

4. Nothing is a silly question

5. Make time for reflection

6. Follow where the life is

7. Don’t pay too much attention to organisations and structures — they aren’t real

8. Pay attention to relationships — they are real

9. If in doubt, do what is truthful and loving

10. Keep track of your first impressions and questions as they will be insightful

11. Stay connected to the big picture

12. Wild suggestions are always welcome
