The Backbone — Episode 29: The First 100 Days as a Finance Leader of a Venture-Backed Startup
On this episode of The Backbone I chat with Bryn Knox, Head of Finance at BenchSci.
Joining me on this episode of the Backbone is Bryn Knox, Head of Finance at BenchSci. For biomedical researchers, BenchSci is a reagent intelligence platform that reduces the time, uncertainty, and cost of scientific experiments. BenchSci uses machine learning to decode comprehensive open- and closed-access datasets, display published figures with no commercial bias, and allow researchers to search by important experimental variables.
Bryn oversees the Finance function at BenchSci. He began his career in marketing, working at 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios, however his aptitude and passion for finance led him to make a career change, landing in Acquisitions at ole Media Management and Finance at Wave. His experience gives him a unique view in how finance can be instrumental in driving growth, unlocking new business opportunities, and scaling teams. Bryn has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and holds the CPA, CMA designation.
On this episode of The Backbone, I chat with Bryn about:

- Benchsci and what is it all about.
- His first 100 days and what he prioritized as a set up the finance function as the first finance hire at BenchSci, after the company had raised $8M Series A round.
