Welcome back to The Backbone: a journey inside finance at a startup. This week, Eugene Bomba, CFO & VP Operations at Thoughtwire joins me in the hot seat!

For more background on the launch of this podcast, check out Introducing The Backbone!

I had the chance to chat with Eugene Bomba, the Chief Financial Officer & VP Operations at ThoughtWire, an Internet of Things platform that makes the world we live and work in smarter and more connected.

Prior to joining ThoughtWire, Eugene was a Partner and the Canadian Leader of PwC’s Emerging Company Services practice where he focused on early stage and high growth companies. Prior to joining PwC, Eugene was the CFO at Healthscreen Solutions Inc., an early stage technology company that was listed on the TSX-V. Eugene has been a major influencer in the Canadian startup ecosystem, from speaking engagements at various technology events to mentorship positions at several Toronto-based accelerators and incubators. Eugene is a designated CPA, CA and holds a BComm from the University of Toronto.

On this episode of The Backbone, I chat with Eugene about:

  1. How he got started in the tech scene and his involvement in the startup ecosystem for a long time both as an operator and and advisor
  2. What ThoughtWire is does and is all about
  3. How’s it being back in the CFO seat
  4. The biggest differences between being an advisor for tech startups to being the finance leader of a fast growth tech company
  5. Considerations you make when deciding whether to raise capital or not
  6. The importance of the finance function at an early stage technology company

We close things off with a quickfire round:

  • Go to online resource for all things startup finance related
  • Favourite productivity hack
  • One thing you don’t leave the office before finishing
