he wanted her to change to dress in ways
that suited. the way her hair swept up. her shirts
too braced. he tore them. from side to side the cotton
burst. allowed him. the long arm of his law inside
she bled. forgave him. each truth instinctively she saw
but later never trusted. infuriatingly so. that stupid grin
which crossed his face and like a child he squirmed
she never left him though. the words he turned
the twisted ropes he bound her with. and now
he’s gone she doesn’t trust herself. she. hates him
but hates herself the more. for being ‘wrong’
for being
not the sort of woman he preferred
for being
herself.
