The Trump administration has a vision for a federal government with no diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hires. The assumption is that DEI hires — women, minorities, military veterans, and people with disabilities — do not deserve their jobs. In the administration’s opinion, DEI hires do not possess the necessary skills or experience for their jobs, especially in leadership positions. Of course, they are wrong.

What everyone forgets is what DEI hires bring to the table. The reason you want diversity of thinking in a leadership team is so that someone will ask the hard questions about problematic issues.

Someone must ask the boss questions. The boss may pursue a course of action that will not work. If the executive team has diversity of life experiences, the opportunity to detect and correct a wrong course of action is greatly enhanced.

Remind yourself why DEI hires make a difference in an organization's success. The reason is that women, minorities, military veterans, and people with disabilities have a different view of life than people who do not have built-in struggle in their lives.
