Fans hate your “deconstruction” for a good reason

You may have noticed a nasty little trend running through Hollywood and TV over the last few years. I’m not sure whether it’s because there’s a lack of real creativity amongst writers and directors or whether it’s because they are trying to be edgy, but traditional heroes are being ripped down and shat all over like it’s a fucking Nazi book burning rally.

Luke Skywalker, Thor and Mulan, are just a few of the heroes we’ve come to know and love who have been given the recent treatment and fans have predictably hated every single instance. Before we get into specific examples though, let’s get to the heart of what’s actually going on here.

Deconstruction, or destruction?

These treatments of our heroes are often given the term “deconstruction.” As though it’s some legitimate attempt to really make us think and give us a different take. Watchmen or even Avengers: Age of Ultron would be actual examples of a deconstruction, where you’re asking questions about the consequences of having superheroes running around making a mess of everything.
