Remember in your non-digital classroom, the number line above the chalkboard and the clock?

If teacher allowed it, and you threw a dart at the numberline, you would always hit an irrational number.

I’ve never forgotten that wisdom. And then I added to it when I discovered complex numbers. They are based on the imaginary number i. Which is the square root of -1. No more number line — now it’s a plane. That pretty picture is actually an imaginary plane.

If you threw a dart — NO! Just holding it sticks it in dead into the realm of the imaginaries.

Maybe I sound nuts making “my number” be imaginary. But check out this source, a Brit as amazed by numbers as I am:
