Survival
Thrifty words theme challenge #13: Survival
Arriving at the top of the snowfield, littered with gigantic broken stones of granite, I thought I could pick my way down.
Correction. No snowfield, a glacier! One gigantic broken boulder was coming up fast, flat side where my feet would hit.
I woke up the next day: a Survivor.
This was a tricky assignment for me. The word “survival” should be a synonym for “Fred Ermlich.” I wanted to key off of the word, so I didn’t read anybody’s stories on the subject.
Now that my story is writ I’ve been able to read some others. I read several, but sometimes didn’t understand what they were saying. I avoided Marla Bishop’s survival story — I don’t want to be accused of favoritism. And she’s not my favorite — she and Reuben Salsa are both my favorites.
I think Reuben Salsa might wonder why I love this article of his. But it’s actually a profound study. See why he couldn’t get fat-shamed by Instagram:
Hint. The miracle isn’t his subtlety. No, it’s that he is completely honest. He doesn’t call himself a big person or “plus size.” He uses the delicate word, “fat.” No euphemisms. Anyway, these are the first ‘fat’ pictures I’ve ever seen that are so elegant.
