The Artist Now Long Gone~

RIP Whitney

The Artist now long gone
Still her Spirit lingers on
And I can hear her voice
singing the words
“Waiting to exhale”

Like two opposing generals
in their respective war rooms
So too our hearts
locked in their opposing silence
Each awaiting news
that the battle has tipped
in their favour
Each knowing
that with every passing moment
Love will die the death
of a thousand casualties
And though bloodless
every vein is ruptured
Every muscle torn
Every bone broken
Every precious thought
forsaken

And generals push metal pieces
across sterile surfaces
No bloodstains on their battlefield
No bodies to be removed
No buried memories
Just the cold reality
of hearts on fire
fueled by blocked desires
And even in victory you’ve lost
Having to celebrate alone
Now that you’e killed
the only other heart
you’ve ever known
Long gone now are the roses
of youthful romances
We’ve gotten so much older
And still in our hearts
we’ve never grown

And the Artist now long gone
Still her Spirit lingers on
And I can hear her voice
singing the words
“Waiting to exhale”
Though we are reminded
by the beauty of her voice
We can taste the bitter poison
of her choice
Showered with the accolades
of their guilt
Dust to dust
Her ashes
will never again
respond to the warmth
of their hugs
Her kisses
never to be as sweet
No longer seen
are the diamonds
that once graced the soles
on her feet

And the many tomorrows
she never had
are the milestones to remind us
needless today to be sad
And the Artist
now long gone
Still her Spirit lingers on
And I can hear
her voice singing the words
“Long past time we exhaled”
