There’s something we need to understand about art and the role it plays in our society, particularly when it comes to stuff that’s a little more in the “borderline” zone.

The art that resonates with us the most says a lot about who we are — it speaks to our moral and political views, our personal struggles in life, and so on.

When I was growing up, the things I was allowed to watch ranged from Scooby-Doo to the Sixth Sense, from Star Wars to Hellraiser.

You may be wondering why a child would sit alone at night and play the Resident Evil series or watch movies like The Thing over and over again.

Truth be told, I wonder the same exact thing.

I had pretty chill parents in that regard. They didn’t really care what sort of things I saw on screen, even as a child. Of course, they still covered my eyes during sex scenes, but everything else was fair game.

I remember many nights in which I’d sit with my mother and watch scary movies — an activity that we both enjoyed.

There’s something I’ve come to realize more and more as I get older, however, which is that some people actually are spooked by scary, twisted, somewhat demented…
