Paul Mooney during Standup

Few comedians have dedicated their life and legacy to educating their people. Paul Mooney was one such comedian. Sadly, the pioneer passed Wednesday morning in Oakland, California after suffering a major heart attack. He was 79.

Today, Mooney’s family posted this message to his Twitter:

“Thank you all from the bottom of all of our hearts …you’re all are the best!…… Mooney World .. The Godfather of Comedy — ONE MOON MANY STARS! To all in love with this great man, many thanks.”

Young Paul Mooney

A Louisiana native, Paul Gladney moved to Hollywood after discovering his knack for making people laugh. From there, he worked as a writer for Good Times and Sanford and Son all while honing his skills as a standup comedian.

As a writer, Mooney’s work with Richard Pryor helped make both comedians trailblazers in the industry. Using laughter as a catalyst to educate audiences on the Black experience as it relates to racism was a unique and poignant style of funny.
