The former first lady said she still gets asked about her popular phrase, when they go low, we go high. Her response, “going high is the only thing that works; but let’s be clear, going high means standing fierce against hatred.”

When she was the first lady, her approval ratings were actually higher than her husband’s — and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Arguably the most beloved first lady in history, Michelle Obama is a not-so-secret weapon. And having her speak on day 1 of the Democratic Convention was a strategic move.

“You simply cannot fake your way through this job; being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.”

Obama cautioned against another 4 years of Trump tutelage citing the main issues America is currently dealing with and juxtaposing her husband’s two terms. During Barack Obama’s presidency, there was an Ebola outbreak that could have turned into a pandemic but was stopped in time.

Obama alluded to Covid-19 being ignored by Trump for too long as the possible reason for the current pandemic and deaths that occurred as a result.

What was perhaps most interesting was her mention of the Black lives lost during the pandemic — specifically George Floyd and Breonna Taylor — and the lack of empathy that comes from the current white house regime.

Philado Castille, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, and countless other Black lives were lost during her husband’s presidency. Still, no legislation was put into place to protect the Black lives that were supposed to matter.

Four years ago, according to Obama, Trump lost the national popular vote by nearly 3 million “And we’ve all been living with the consequences.”

She didn’t hold back on her criticism of Trump.

“Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for this country. It is what it is.”

Michelle Obama on Joe Biden

In an effort to garner empathy, Obama mentioned Biden’s losses — of which he has experienced many, more than most. The loss of his wife and child, each profound, makes him a relatable candidate in a way that gives him another leg up on Trump. Obama’s theme of empathy goes well with Biden’s past of loss and tragedy.

Trump’s loss of his brother just hit the press two days ago.

As the DNC marches on, Biden, Harris, and Booker are all expected to speak.
