The Music Around You: Detrimental for Your Health (D.F.Y.H)

Most bands typically thrive off of their genre of music which is usually labeled by their fans. For example, the thrash metal fan base tends to stick together and support bands that fall into that genre, which causes me to wonder what happens to bands that go against that mold or who are not labeled as anything in particular. This was something that caught my ear when I first listened to Detrimental for Your Health (D.F.Y.H.). I had written an article about them previously for The Breeze but I recently caught one of their shows again in Moreno Valley, California. To no surprise, the band continues to play what they want and move back and forth between genres.

T hey’ll start off with some ska and then move into some slower indie rock and then get into something like power violence. The audience always starts off a little bit confused but typically ends up getting really into the set. What’s also noticeable are the different responses that different areas generate. In Moreno Valley and Fontana, D.F.Y.H.’s crowd reacts stronger to their punk and ska, but other locations like Ontario or Los Angeles, the indie sound draws bigger and diverse crowds. Their fluidity as a band allows them to shift not only between different shows but also between audiences, where there is always something for everyone.
