In the last seven years, I have worked as a game developer, and I’ve had the chance to work on some amazing projects with some amazing people. I’ve also been fortunate enough to work on a variety of game genres, from first person shooters to puzzle games.

In this article, I’m going to share with you my top 7 tips for becoming a successful game programmer. I hope you find them helpful!

1. Get comfortable with C++

C++ is the industry standard for game programming. If you want to be a successful game programmer, you need to be comfortable with C++. You don’t need to be an expert, but you should at least be able to read and write C++ code.

2. Learn about game engines

A game engine is a piece of software that provides a set of common functionality that is needed to develop a video game. The three most popular game engines are Unity, Unreal Engine, and Godot. Each engine has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to learn about all of them.

3. Choose a game engine and stick with it

Once you’ve learned about the different game engines, it’s time to choose one and stick with it. Don’t try to learn all of the engines at once, because you’ll just get overwhelmed and won’t make any progress. Pick one engine and focus on learning it.

4. Find a project to work on

Once you’ve chosen an engine, it’s time to find a project to work on. There are many ways to find projects, but the best way is to find a project that you’re passionate about. If you can find a project that you’re passionate about, you’ll be much more likely to stick with it and see it through to the end.

5. Start small and build up

When you’re first starting out, it’s important to start small and build up. Don’t try to make a huge game right away, because you’ll just get frustrated and give up. Start with a small project, and then gradually make it bigger and bigger.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

When you’re first starting out, it’s normal to feel like you’re in over your head. If you ever feel like you’re in over your head, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many people who are willing to help, so don’t be afraid to reach out.

7. Persevere

Becoming a successful game developer takes time, effort, and perseverance. There will be times when you feel like giving up, but it’s important to persevere. If you persevere, you will eventually become a successful game developer.

These are my top 7 tips for becoming a successful game developer. If you follow these tips, you will be well on your way to becoming a successful game developer.
