How do you go from nothing to being massively successful? Have you ever heard someone say “I did it all by myself!”? They lied.

When it comes to success in any industry, you need to have someone to teach you. When you start a new job, someone trains you. When you are learning a new skill, you take a class. The same is true for success. You have to learn “success” from somewhere.

There are three kinds of people you need in your life to become successful: Coach/Mentor. Accountability Partner. Mentee.

How many New Year’s resolutions have you made to date? Can you even remember what resolutions you made last year on the New Year? 38% of the population that set a New Year’s resolution make weight-related goals. Have you ever made a resolution to go to the gym more? Read more self-development books, etc.? Do you remember how long it was before you stopped following up on your goal? 75% of people make it their first week working towards their goal. This means that 1 in 4 people have already quit in under a week. Only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions actually achieve their resolution. However, studies show that one of the reasons why 92% of people do not accomplish their New Year’s resolutions is that they do not have an accountability partner. They don’t have someone who will meet them at the gym, follow up to see if they are eating healthily, and ask them about their progress.

Get an Accountability Partner:

Most of us have read or watched the tale of Alice in Wonderland. I would like to share with you a dialogue from that book/movie that talks about the importance of direction, but more importantly it talks about the importance of an accountability partner:

Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”

Alice: “I don’t much care where –”
Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”

We all need direction and we all have to set goals. Otherwise, we will never accomplish anything. When you have another person to bounce ideas off of, it can help you to get much further in life. When you are in business for yourself, sometimes it can be hard to stay motivated and to keep going after things when you feel drained. The beauty of having an accountability partner is that, that person can help lift you up and look at the situation from the outside.

A good way to find an accountability partner is to join a mastermind and be around like-minded individuals who push each other to excel. For me personally, I get so busy that I’ll set goals and forget them. I do podcasts weekly and I post videos daily on Facebook. I know that if I don’t attach a pain to me not posting, that if I don’t have accountability partners, some things will fall through the cracks. So I talked to my accountability partners and I made a deal with them that if I don’t post my videos daily or my podcast every Tuesday, I owe the first five people who catch me $1000. That definitely helps me to keep up with posting! It can be extremely difficult to keep up with goals if you’re the only person keeping you accountable.

Get a Coach or Mentor:

The number one tip to finding a coach, straight from the Olympics says, “The best coach is someone who can help you be the best you can be…. A good coach is positive, enthusiastic, supportive, trusting, focused, goal-oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, patient and a clear communicator.

Self-determination is great but at the end of the day, it doesn’t get you as far as having someone else on your butt, helping you to stick to your word. The best option for an accountability partner is a coach. The simplest version of a coach is a personal trainer. It’s the person who keeps you on track to losing the weight or getting into your dream shape. You should have a coach in every area in your life that you want to grow in. If you want to grow in business, get a business coach. If you want to grow in spirituality, then get a spiritual coach. If you want to eat healthier, get a health coach. Find the people who are living what you want to have and ask them for coaching or mentorship. Then surround yourself with like-minded individuals. You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with. If you are the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room. You need to surround yourself with people who will push you and stretch you and challenge you. Spend time with people who are better than you are so that you can learn from them. These people will help blossom your life in ways you never imagined.

The following 10 qualities are what the Olympics recommend to look for when finding a coach. These same qualities are transferable to business.

10 Key Qualities To Look For In A Coach

  1. Understands the Sport and Leads by Example
  2. Sponge for Knowledge / Profound Thinker / Visionary
  3. Shares the Knowledge / Educates Others
  4. Highly Energized and a Motivator
  5. Knows the Athlete, Values and Respects that Relationship

Get a Mentee:

Find someone who you can pour what you’re learning into. The best way to learn is to teach. Find people who you can help from where you are at now. In conclusion, if you want to be successful, find someone that will help to push you to achieve your goals. Find someone you can bounce your ideas off of.

In conclusion, if you believe you will be successful without having a coach, an accountability partner, or a mentee, it won’t happen. I spoke more abut this in my book, Entrepreneursh*t.
