Reading Counts

Serving the Students of Elm City

Last Spring I had the honor of being named to Mayor Tony Harp’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Reading. Our goal is to recognize literacy instruction as a city wide issue. We want to analyze what is going on in New Haven with reading instruction and make recommendations for the future.

I serve as chair, with Dr Eden Stein, of the grade level expectations sub committee. Our charged includes evaluating the entire New Haven Public School’s reading curriculum grade level by grade level. My subcommittee meets monthly and is comprised of fellow faculty and educators.

We are conducting a modified SWOT analysis to determine what factors enhance and inhibit the goal of having the majority of students in New Haven reading at grade level.
