Possible Mobile Abortion Clinic Uncovered in South Carolina
During a recent state-wide “law-enforcement blitz,” deputies of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina made a disturbing discovery. In addition to seizing drugs, firearms, and cash, deputies found what looked to be a “mobile abortion clinic.” Disturbing, but it should come as no surprise to anyone actually living in the state of South Carolina.
The Palmetto state has some of the nation’s most restrictive (and unconstitutional) abortion laws in the country. Technically, the procedure is illegal after 12 weeks, though this measure is unenforceable due to Roe V. Wade.
In order to have an abortion, women in South Carolina are forced to attend biased counseling. They must also wait a minimum of 24 hours after this lecture before having the procedure.
Desperate Times, Desperate Measures
With these draconian and unlawful regulations in place, is it any wonder that desperate women are seeking illegal means to exercise their Constitutionally protected right to terminate a pregnancy?
Back in September, The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) closed two of the state’s three abortion clinics due to various state law violations. Yes, you read that right. South Carolina, a state with nearly five million residents, had only three abortion clinics. Now they have one.
One of the laws that both of the centers closed violated was a TRAP law called the “Women’s Right to Know Act”, which forces women to attend the aforementioned counseling class, plus receive “educational materials” which encourage women to to pregnancy crisis centers for free ultrasounds. This measure also covers the 24 hour waiting period.
Who Needs Facts When You Have Bullshit?
When asked about the recent closings, ultra-conservative South Carolina governor Nikki Haley (Republican, obviously) had this to say,
“The entire country was shocked by the videos showing Planned Parenthood employees’ horrifying disregard for human life. That prompted me to ask our appropriate state agency to investigate whether such wrongdoing was taking place in our state. The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has now completed its investigation and has concluded that all three abortion clinics in the state are in fact in violation of South Carolina laws or regulations.
This is completely unacceptable.
I fully support DHEC’s actions, including its referral of the matter to SLED [South Carolina Law Enforcement Division]. South Carolina is a compassionate state, and we are a state of laws. We will not tolerate law breaking of any kind, particularly as it relates to the callous treatment of human life.”
Funny you should mention those Planned Parenthood videos, Nikki, because as it turns out, they were total bullshit. The thing is, facts don’t matter to zealots like Haley. The Nikki Haleys of the world are completely unable to differentiate between a mass of cells inside a woman’s womb and a cute, cuddly baby on a TV advert.
Some lives are more “Sacred” than others
GOP darlings like Nikki Haley may talk a big game about concern for the sanctity of human life, but that concern ends once that human is born, especially if that human life is female, a person of color, poor, and/or queer.
Pictured above: Life before Roe V. Wade
The only “human life” religious conservatives give two fucks about are white, Christian ones. So long as that white Christian isn’t also a pregnant woman seeking a Constitutionally protected abortion.
Those women, along with any other women unfortunate enough to live in the hellscape that is South Carolina, are being forced into back-alley clinics to be butchered like animals.
NOW is our time to be outraged. Now is our time to step up and say “No more.” Not five years from now when fundies like Nikki Haley and Mike Huckabee get their way and make all abortion illegal.
Nor is six months from now the time; not when it’s YOUR wife, daughter, sister, lover, etc. who is pregnant and wants to terminate, but now.
NOW. There are lives to be saved here, we cannot afford to wait and see if the tide turns.
A special thanks to Kayla from Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for bringing this story to my attention.
