This month, I arrive on time (almost) and feeling grateful to be stepping into a new season alongside all of our Black Veil writers.

There is something about autumn’s slow unfurling that feels aligned with the spirit of this publication… the darkening days, the sharpened air, the sense of reflection and reckoning.

So, instead of apology, this month I begin with appreciation — for your patience, your presence, and the way our words weave together in this space.

As we enter this season, may we write with both shadow and light, honouring not just what we share with others but the deeper responsibility we hold to ourselves and our practice.

This piece reads like both spell and survival manual. With vivid imagery salt, names, and hinges become symbols of cost and survival. The rhythm creates a ritualistic feel that lingers long after reading.
