Greetings and Welcome to The Blackboard Bulletin Report!

To reintroduce myself: I am Quintessa Williams, a Journalist + Contributing Writer from South Florida. I’ve been writing and reporting professionally for over six years, and I hope I’ll never have to turn it loose. I am also a proud founding member and moderator for the Writers and Editors of Color Collective. I have bylines in MadameNoire, The Root, Blavity, and midnight&indigo.

From then to now, I’ve had the privilege to write and cover various subjects pertinent to the Black community, such as social justice, racial injustice, Black women and maternal mortality, mental health, DEI, entertainment, and more.

I am currently an Education Reporter for Word In Black, where I cover news, insights, and issues critical to Black students and how racial disparities impact their education, families, and communities. My journey into education reporting has allowed me to understand the deep-rooted systemic issues that continue to hinder Black students, from disproportionate truancy laws to the underfunding of public schools. In the last six months, I’ve been honored to cover topics that centers Black students’ struggles and triumphs.

The Blackboard Bulletin

It is partly why I decided to launch The Blackboard Bulletin Report. Launching this November on here and Substack, TBB will report on the news, insights, successes, and complexities of Black education in America.

Through my work, I’ve realized how important it is to not only report on these critical insights and issues, — but to also spark conversations around them. From special education policies that funnel Black students based on behavior to the school-to-prison pipeline to the exclusionary discipline of Black girls to reading and math proficiency disparities to overall advocating for our children’s educational welfare, I aim to provide a transparent and honest analysis of the education system that Black students navigate every day.

Every week, I’ll break down the latest news, studies, and policies impacting Black education. The goal is to keep us all informed, engaged, and inspired to join the movement in bettering education for our students, schools, families, and communities.

Why It Matters

We are living in a time where the state of education for Black students is at an all-time crossroads — one that has left our children caught between racial disparities, lack of funding, and political agendas that devastate academic achievement. As someone who has interviewed and collaborated with educators, activists, and parents, I have seen how deeply these issues cut in and beyond the classroom. Black students are often left to navigate hostile education environments, and their stories are frequently ignored or misunderstood.

TBB newsletter is my way of making sure these stories don’t get lost in mainstream narratives.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, I hope to learn and grow from everything this space has to offer. I can’t wait to share this journey with you.

To Learning & Light,

Quintessa
