Insecure: Season 5 Episode 5 Review
“Surviving, Okay?!”
Molly Recap:
While hooking up with a stranger, Molly receives multiple missed call notifications from her family. Her mom has been rushed to the hospital! Molly’s leadership skills kick in as she gets to the bottom of her mom’s health scare.
Review:
Molly is known for her need to control everything, and in past seasons her controlling behavior led to her losing many relationships. But during this episode, we got to witness Molly thrive in what she does best — lead. After watching this scene, I realized that Molly is the backbone of her family. Interestingly, it took a family crisis for me to realize it, but it’s obvious now. When Molly walked into the hospital, her brother Jerome sat reflecting on the last words to his mother with an anxious bouncing leg. Her brother, Curtis, nervously recounted the change in his side pocket. Her dad couldn’t even answer the nurse’s questions. Amid the anxiety-filled room, there stood Molly, calm and collected. Although Molly did grow frustrated with her dad for keeping secrets, I think her attitude and behavior were justifiable under the circumstances. Molly adding herself to the emergency list was a great decision made on her part. This just ensures that next time there is an emergency, she’s the first to find out.
Issa Recap:
Issa wakes up to Nathan’s specialized bedside service. Okay, it was only tea, but it was still cute though! Issa and Nathan spend the day together as Issa tries to tend to Molly in her time of need.
Review:
Although I’m team Issa and Lawrence, I love to see Issa smiling and in a happy relationship. Besides, Nathan has remained such a mystery on the show. It’s intriguing to watch him open up and grow as a more prominent character. My favorite scene from this episode is when Nathan and Issa’s mom meet. While walking Molly’s dog, Flavor Flav, Issa’s mom calls on Facetime. Nathan officially introduces himself as Issa’s boyfriend. This scene makes me smile because you can tell Issa is feeling that title. Their connection reminded me of season three, episode four when they spent the entire day together talking and wandering through the neighborhood. There’s a spark of adventure and spontaneity between them that she and Lawrence didn’t have. While on Facetime, Flavor Flav escapes. Issa and Nathan are pushed to work together to find him.
After they finally are reconciled with Flavor Flav, Issa says I love you. Nathan doesn’t respond. This is confusing to me, considering he went out of his way to push the boyfriend narrative to her mom. Maybe he spoke too soon.
