The Houston Comets: Lost In Time
The ultimate goal for a sports team‘s all across the world is to win a championship. When you win a championship your success is engraved in the history books forever. But one team has been lost in time, despite their tremendous success in the WNBA.
The Houston Comets were one of the original eight WNBA teams and they captured four consecutive championships of the leagues existence. With the absence of a football team, the Houston Comets competed with the Astros and Houston Rockets for the best team in the city. With players such as Tina Thompson, Cynthia Cooper, Kim Perrot, and many more, the Houston Comets did not disappoint! They mastered putting on a show every time they stepped foot onto the court.
According to Undefeated.com, “ In 1997, the team’s average game attendance started at 9,703, rose to 12,602 in 1998, dipped to 11,906 the following year, and bounced back to 12,255 during the fourth championship run. ” So it’s a known fact the city of Houston loved the newly established team.
When you think of some of the best teams in basketball, you must ponder the idea of the Houston Comets being one of those teams with the success they had from beginning to end. However, there is an old saying that goes, “All good things must come to an end”. Just like the Houston Oilers, the Comets were abruptly taken away from the city of Houston and never seen again.
As a little kid, I fell in love with the Houston Comets because no matter win, lose, or draw the Comets were going to put on a show. I always wanted a Houston Comets to win because as soon as the buzzer sounded; red, blue, and white confetti would go into the air. It’s a sad sight to see that the Houston Comets are non-existent in the WNBA and the City of Houston. There is no doubt in my mind that the Houston Comets are one of the greatest basketball teams ever.
