Umoja — a village without men

Umoja was founded in Kenya 25 years ago and became popular place for tourists over time. A main feature of the village — there are no men.

The village was founded by Rebecca Lolosoli. With her wished to live yet 14 women, who were raped or suffered from the strict patriarchal family system. Gradually the village was growing, because women (also sufferers) from different villages of Kenya was coming to Umoja.

Renown of the village was growing too. Along with journalists tourists began to come this place. They had a craft shop in the early 2000s, where tourists can buy some special national souvenirs.

Otherside there are some exceptions: women hire men for grazing and surrounding the village with scratchy bush. The are also can invite a lover.

TJ assembled photos of Umoja.
